The Theory Of Poker
Oh yes... You heard it. I finally finished the first poker book I ever bought. It is David Sklansky's 'The Theory Of Poker'. I think I chose the book because it sounds like something that would give me the best idea about poker since I have a University background and a degree on Math. Don't get me wrong I found the book extremely good and interesting but still I kind of wish I had picked some less 'heavy' poker book to start with.
To be honest I think that the book is not the best possible book for a beginner since it does not give you any easy instructions like: if you have AA push all your chips to the middle of the table :D However. It does give you the tools you need if you really want to think about the different situations on the poker table more based on math and theory than instinct.
Another thing about the book that I found was that it really does explain some things that you think about when playing even though you propably think that there is no theory behind the way you play... Now, what does that even mean? Ok. For example: You bluff bet/raise more against tight players since you know they will fold even mediocre/good cards more often than other opponents. But how many times should you bluff against them or against a normal player to make your play more profitable? That's what you can find from the book. Don't ask me since I decided that I will read that chapter again after couple of months and see if I'll understand it better that time ;)
Anyway. I recommend reading the book but I really think that it is not the best possible book as the first poker book for you to read. As the title says it is about the Theory Of Poker so the content is very theoretical in some sense. However everything is explained so that you really don't need to be some Math Professor to understand it.
Next up... I think I'll buy some book about the playing Tournament Poker ...or Pot Limit Omaha ...or just NL Hold'Em since it seems that I have really lost my edge on that (if I ever had any to begin with).
Oh yes... Do I think that reading the book has improved my play? Well... Yes and no. The reason is that I think that reading the book is a good thing but I think that I really haven't made any profit playing this year so far. Well... That's mainly due to the fact that I have been trying to learn how to play Pot Limit Omaha with not that great of a success so far... BUT... That's a different story.
Anyway... Read more, Play more, Win more,... Propably not in that particular order though ;)
